ART OF BATIC ACCORDING TO L.G. OBUKHEVICH

THE CAY FISH (ZANCLUS COMUTUS).

Materials and implements (photo 1).

1. Firm, light, plywood (chipboard, fiber board) sketch-board according to necessary size.

2. Fabric: Cotton or linen as an underlying surface, it should exceed the sketch-board.

3. Large steel clips for fastening.

4. Ground synthetical acrylic brushes of #2, #4, #6.

5. DECOLA acrylic dyes for fabric of 12 colours (manufactured in St. Petersburg, Russia).

6. Acrylic outlines for fabric or universal (gold, silver, white).

7. Silver gel pen, set of colour ball point pens.

8. Scissors for cutting of patterns.

9. Water.

10. Foam sponge.

11. Colour pattern from any magazine, book etc. (photo 2), which was chosen by you for drawing, for instance, a cay fish (zanclus comutus).

12. Photocopy of the pattern, blown-up to necessary size (photo 3).

13. Light transparent or translucent fabric for painting (artificial or synthetic chiffon, viscose, organza, silk) of any light pastel hue (white, delicate pink, sand-coloured, pale green, delicate light blue, light turquoise, delicate yellow, pale gray, light).

Carrying out sequence of painting on a fabric.

1. A fabric should be preliminarily ironed to be not crumpled.

2. Cover a sketch-board, which should be preliminary covered with an underlying surface of cotton or linen, with the ironed fabric.

3. Cut a pattern of a fish of a black and white photocopy, printed from original (photo 4).

4. Outline patterns of the fish with a gel or ball point pen on opaque silk. If a fabric is transparent, then lay the black and white photocopy under the fabric (photo 5, 6, 7).

5. Wet the fabric with pure water by means of a sponge, if the fabric is transparent (photo 8). Such work can be conducted on a light opaque fabric of average density or on a dense fabric (satin, cotton, linen, synthetic materials) without preliminary wetting with water, so to say on a dry surface.

6. Draw basic colours on the wet fabric:

а) yellow (photo 9);

б) turquoise (рис. 10);

7. Shade turquoise stripes from top and bottom edge of the fish. Use dark blue or violet dye for that.

Orange shadows will suit yellow stripes (photo 11).

8. Outline turquoise stripes on the fish with black colour by a brush #2, and also outline a stripe on the tail and draw an eye (photo 12).

9. To faster drying up of the work it is possible to dry it by a hairdryer (photo 13). After that outline the fish and all details (the eye, fins, stripes, tail) with acrylic outline outside and inside (photo 14). Dye of any colour will suit for this (white, silver or gold).

Note.

Dyes on wet fabric will diverge from boundaries of drawn fish. Let it not embarrass you. Continue to work subsequently.

When you finish drawing the fish then indicate corals and stones around it with light painting (photo 15). Now iron the item carefully on the inner side or through a fine fabric for ironing.
